Review of Stroszek (1977) by Ignacio L — 10 Jan 2011
10.1.2011.
I had some problems with this film. The early scenes in Germany didn't look good - they were ugly and smelled of beer. That might have been the purpose, though. My other problem is the way Herzog handles the film's protagonist. He's an alcoholic, quite stupid (he travels to America to live there but never bothers to even learn the language) and responsible for his own problems. Yet, Herzog seems to use him to critize society. He should have written a much smarter character. Also, I found the storytelling and editing clunky. However, I liked the atmosphere of Wisconsin - the film got it right. So, it works better as a historical document of that time than as a film. Also, I really liked the last shot of the dancing hen.
