Review of Strictly Ballroom (1992) by Bob V — 27 Mar 2011
Bar Luhrman's first part of his Red Curtain trilogy, which would be followed by "Romeo & Juliet" and triumphantly closed with "Moulin Rouge!".
Ballroom is somewhat forgotten amongst the enormous - and more international - success of those other two, but it really should not be: all the Luhrman touches are present, the plot might be slightly better, and the balance between melodramatic sweetness & joyous hilarity is effectively maintained.
Strong acting performances by all concerned, with a convincing Ugly Duckling to Beautiful Swan metamorphosis by Tara Morice and Paul Mercurio being steamier than you've ever seen him (or will see again, for that matter).
