Review of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) by Hieu Y — 16 Aug 2009
This movie makes the 1994 Street Fighter look like a cult classic. You can't call this a "street fighter" movie if you're just going to use guns for most of the movie. Remember the fight scene between Vega and Chun-Li from the anime where he attacks her just as she gets out of the shower? Hot! But don't expect something like that in this movie. It took a lot out of me just to stay for the ending.
I gave this a 2-star as I pay respects to Kristin Kreuk and Robin Shou; their relationship is the best part about this movie (although I do have to admit I kept seeing Gen as an aged Liu Kang). The movie is fraught with short, non-street fighter choreography, plot discrepancies, and disappointing dialogues. Capcom should not have put their name on this project. Kristin Kreuk and Robin Shou were the only reason that I actually made it to the end of the movie. Bottom line: if you like eye candy i.e. Kristin Kreuk (her acting isn't actually bad either), rent the thing; if you're a fan of the Street Fighter franchise, don't bother wasting your money. This movie makes the Dead or Alive movie actually entertaining.
