Review of Stranger Than Paradise (1984) by Nicolas L — 17 Jun 2008
I was actually somewhat shocked to find out that many people considered this to be an actual movie. The black and white is really beautiful, though I don't think they tried too hard to catch any really stimulating images.
I enjoyed the classical musical score, though. You get the sense that ol' Jim decided to make a movie about listening to Screamin' Jay Hawkins while bored. Nowadays, every third movie trailer has a clip of "I Put a Spell on You.
" It's totally requisite, like having to hear Etta James' "At Last" every time you go to a wedding. He may have been a pioneer, breaking the record of how many times you can fit "I Put a Spell On You" into a movie(i use that loosely, since i'm still on the fence as to whether this qualifies as a movie), but I think they just decided one day to try and take the plot out of a movie and see what would happen.
I don't have a problem with the slow pace, but I couldn't really find any dynamic driving any of the action.
