Review of Stranger Than Paradise (1984) by Chris V — 26 Nov 2008
I saw this for the first time a couple years ago after having my wisdom teeth out. In hindsight, maybe being whacked on painkillers WAS the proper way to experience the film. Who knows? He's an acquired taste, but I am a Jim Jarmusch fan, and this -- his 1984 debut -- is probably the best of his films I have seen.
All of his trademarks are here: the rrrreally slow and unconventional pace, the pokerfaced deadpan humor, the self-conscious weirdness, the overriding fuck-all attitude. And ... I don't know. I realize this frustrates LOTS of people, but the film works really well for me as a result of this.
It's charming, it has a heart, and it's quite easy for me to get into. Even when I'm not popping Vicodin like candy.
