Review of Stranger Than Paradise (1984) by Josh S — 10 Dec 2010
An early Jarmusch film. Very interesting. I think the "normal" moviegoer would hate this film. All scenes are done in one shot. All actors were amateurs. This brings a sense of complete and utter realism to it all.
There are two key scenes proving this, one is at John Lurie's apartment where he and Richard Edson just sit there for almost a full minute and don't say a word to each other...I could sense the awkwardness present so well! The second would have to be the scene in the movie theater.
It is so true how you want to go out with a girl, only to have her bring her friends along. I can see some of Kevin Smith's work was influenced by this film. Of course nowadays indie fans would call this pretentious, but imagine the impact it had on 1980's America.
