Review of Stormbreaker (2006) by Carlos N — 04 May 2008
A decidedly average film.
It's clear from the way it's presented that it's desperate to be a kids' Bourne film (the action, the camera work, they even use the same music for the chase sequence) but the storyline and script is so clearly seventies' Bond that it just doesn't work. The mixture of irreverence and serious action, which could have made for a real winner, just come across as dull and mundane. It's all so forced and manufactured.
The five minute cameos, far from being little giggles for adults in a bit of a kiddie film, are so frequent that by the time Stephen Fry turns up you just don't care any more.
There's barely any suspense.
It "borrows" wantonly from so many other, better, films.
The casting is bizarre - Alicia Silverstone?
All things considered, it's not an awful film, but it's pretending to be something it's clearly not.
And that bothers me.
