Review of State of Grace (1990) by Stephen C — 11 Feb 2010
A terrific cast highlights this interesting crime drama about a cop who goes undercover in his old Hell's Kitchen stomping grounds. While there's nothing groundbreaking in this film and the ending doesn't fit, it does have a sufficiently gritty realism and the actors help to build some palpable tension throughout the film.
The influence of earlier films like "Mean Streets" is evident, but "State of Grace" was actually ahead of its time itself, as its plot can be seen as a precursor to later films like "10th & Wolf" and "The Departed." Flawed but engaging, "State of Grace" is an above-average gangster flick worthy of at least one viewing.
