About the alien movie craze of 1982, John Carpenter noted how he felt bad that "ET made everyone feel happy and warm while The Thing made everyone basically wanna throw up." His penance for the world-wide (and enjoyable) barf riot was this touching sci-fi romance.
Jeff Bridges gives a great Oscar nominated turn as an alien who takes the form of Karen Allen's late husband.
