Review of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) by Ellen M — 04 Feb 2018
THE SAD PUPPIES WERE RIGHT.
Who were the Sad Puppies? They were a group of science fiction fans who objected to the growing tendency of sci fi to favor the importance of a social message over good storytelling. For some years, the prestigious Hugo Awards for science fiction have been dominated by message-heavy works, while novels that stuck to simply spinning a good yard were excluded.
What's the result of mandatory social messages in fiction? Garbage like "The Last Jedi." The hell with plot or good characterization or paying attention to detail and continuity; what matters to the makers of TLJ is skin color and what genitals a character possesses. And of course, pushing a vegan agenda.
Those of us who DO want to be told a compelling story about well-written characters MUST fight back against the forces of social engineering in films. We can do this with our wallets by kicking Disney and other SJW-heavy filmmakers right where it hurts: in their ticket sales. After all, we have the ultimate power... we are the CUSTOMERS.
