Review of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) by Dave W — 07 Jun 2009
While Star Trek III -Search For Spock may not succeed Wrath Of Kahn but it does continually advance the story from the point where the last film ends and succeeds in resurrecting a pivitol member of starfleet who was supposed to have bitten it for good.
Initially Leornard Nimory grew tired of playing Spock and wanted out but the clmamoring outcry of fans and loyal Trekkies were so uproarious over the death of their beloved Spock that the writers found a way to work Spock back into the sequel and in that respect they succeeded.
Spock works well in just as many ways as it fails. This was the first Trek film to be helmed by Nimoy and it shows his weakness as a director but it also showcases his strong points that will allow him to grow as a director later on.
Christopher Lloyd as a Kilngon hell bent on obtaining the Genesis experiement from the last film surprisingly fits the Kilingon profile. Kirstie Alleys' Lt. Saavik is replaced this time around by another unknown actress and you can actually come to terms with this switch as Kirstie Alley was in my opinion the biggest problem of the last film.
The Blue-Ray transfer for the remastered version of this film nowhere comes close to the crystal ckarity of Wrath Of Khan and this is because the film was not restored like Khan, rather only remastered.
Don't get me wrong, the picture quality and clarity are a one up from the dvd versions previously released but if you watch the end of Wrath of Khan where the camera pans over the folioge and wooded brush areas to Spocks coffin which is then repeated at the beginning of the next film, you will see a very noticable difference between the two versions and the difference that a digital restore can make to a film.
My only question is that...why weren't all the films done this way? If you enjoyed Wrath Of Khan then you will most likely also enjoy The Search For Spock with it's continual story progression and the return of Treks most beloved character.
