Review of Star 80 (1983) by Private U — 17 Feb 2008
Bob Fosse's final film, a harsh, punching look at Hollywood and the tragic life of Dorothy Stratten. Eric Roberts is brilliant as her spurned, compulsive mentor and ex-lover. The film doesn't flinch from the terrible events that lead to her death and his necrophiliac treatment of her corpse.
But as a statement of Hollywood and its promises of dreams and its ruthlessness, it's unsurpassed. PT Anderson's "Boogie Nights" comes close to the call, but I think this one hits you because it's true.
