Review of Stalag 17 (1953) by Steve W — 27 May 2010
Most of the time when you think of prison film you think of the stank and grungy flicks where they make prison to be the filthiest place ever. This film is no different, but is in the league of one of the finest prison dramas yet.
Covered in humorous characters, the wily trader Sefton is the number one gambler entrepreneur. He gets a few extra nice thing by trading with their Nazi captors. When two escapees are found dead, a rat is discovered on their midst. Who is the traitor? Who can be trusted?
A very nicely paced film that doesn't make the Nazis out to be total baddies. They have ambitions and goals as well. William Holden gives a great performance the ending is excellent. A very suspenseful ending to a good prison drama.
