Review of Stalag 17 (1953) by Jared H — 22 Nov 2009
In the scope of billy wilder's incredible career, I would classify this as one of his lesser films, though it has its admirers. I continue to be impressed by the sheer variety of -styles- that wilder was able to master, though there is an undercurrent of cynicism in all his films.
the parallels to renoir's 'la grande illusion' are inescapable, and it's impressive how broadly comic a prison camp story can be played. having seen this, I better understand how 'hogan's heroes' came to be, a show that never made any sense to me at all.
