Review of Stagecoach (1939) by Alejo B — 03 Jul 2008
The genius Orson Welles watched this film every night during his filming of 'Citizen Kane.' Welles thought it to be the greatest example of the time of the perfectly directed film. Welles said of watching 'Stagecoach': "It was like going to school.
" It should be noted also that Welles considered John Ford to be one of the greatest directors of all time. A classic of the romantic era of westerns, this is John Wayne's first big role, the one that launched him to superstardom.
There's a lot of character and plot development, a bit too much at times, but it's ultimately an excellent film. The last 30 minutes are some of the greatest action sequences ever filmed - some 50 years before 'Die Hard.
' The stunts are incredible, and one in particular inspired one of the most famous scenes/stunts in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'.
