Review of St. Elmo's Fire (1985) by Steph O — 29 Jul 2010
Even though they came out around the same time, and starred many of the same actors... "St. Elmo's Fire" is no "The Breakfast Club". "St. Elmo's Fire" is an ensemble movie, about a group of recent college graduates trying to deal with 'the real world' they are suddenly a part of.
Most of the characters' stories in this movie either annoyed me or bored me. I am such a sucker for Andrew McCarthy though. I can't help it, I love him. Ever since I saw "Weekend at Bernie's" as a kid.
And I didn't mind his parts in "St. Elmo's Fire" actually. His character is in love with his friend's girl, and it's all very cute. Ultimately though, "St. Elmo's Fire" tries too hard to be one of the seminal 80s coming-of-age movies.
The funny thing is that's kind of what it became anyway. It just isn't a GREAT seminal 80s coming-of-age movie.
