Review of St. Elmo's Fire (1985) by Scott A — 15 Jun 2013
Okay, I know this is considered a classic and having re-watched it yet again, I still don't get the love some people give this.
I think the film takes out a loan that since you love the actors, most of the Brat Pack is here, that you will just love them in this movie too despite many of them being really awful characters.
And I will admit, most of the times you just like watching these actors in their hay day, but Moore is just a stupid skank in this movie, and her suicide scene is quite laughable. Estevez is a stalker, and the fact that no one, even the girl he stalks, much cares is kind of worrisome. Nelson's character erked me the most. He claims he's a Democrat switching parties cause he make more money as a Republican, all the while saying it's okay to cheat of his love until she agrees to marry him??? You sir are no Democrat!!! :).
Despite the over the top drama, it still is fun to watch all these great actors together and oddly even when the film makes you hate them, you still like the actor so much, it's hard to stay mad. But much of the plot is so filled with fluff.
The music is fantastic, and the theme song is amazing.
