Review of Spotlight (2015) by Richard F — 21 May 2016
Spotlight is basically a cinematic recreation of The Globe's attack on the Catholic Church on the grounds of the many child molestations and even child killings committed by priests. That's the movie in a nutshell. It's the crew of The Globe known as Spotlight going around uncovering this mystery that the Catholic Church had kept under wraps for so long to publish their incriminating article to bring it all to light.
If that is your kind of movie you should enjoy it, but if not than this isn't for you. These real event inspired movies are a mixed bag for me. Sometimes I find the story quite interesting, while other times I find myself extremely bored. Thankfully, the former proves true for Spotlight.
I found the story and how it all played out intriguing. The cast was also great as was the acting. Mark Ruffalo and Michael Keaton especially were amazing. I've always been a fan of Ruffalo and have like every movie I've seen him in and he did not disappoint here either.
Overall, Spotlight is a masterful film. It's not for everyone, but for what it was trying to do it delivered it flawlessly. I did not know much of how the real event played out so I don't know how accurate this is, but for a movie it worked fine. Did it deserve to win best picture? I don't know, but it's a great movie nonetheless.
