Review of Spotlight (2015) by Movie M — 18 Mar 2018
Reviewed 2.23.18. Spotlight does the near impossible. It takes the dreadful true story of an epidemic of child molesting priests (it's still hard to fathom) and turns it into a procedural high wire act. Investigative journalism isn't flashy stuff, but the script is genius, slowly folding the page into an origami masterpiece.
There are a lot of moving parts, which leaves less time to fully develop each character, and their personal motivation. But enough gets across, and with no doubt about who we're routing for, the stage is set.
A dogged group of journalists did their job and exposed an organization previously unkowed over 2000 years of abuses. Finally David's stone hit its mark. If 'the first duty of society is justice,' Spotlight serves us all well.
