Review of Spotlight (2015) by Ashley H — 12 Aug 2016
This is a must watch. This real story of the mass cover ups by the catholic church of rape and molestation is a story that needs to be heard, and this movie is a machine that is optimized to get the job done.
There is no directorial flair, no amazing shots, no real theme even, but a simple presentation so that you are drawn into the realness of the story. The stellar cast plays as a true ensemble, with every character given their own attachment to the issue.
They each mirror some portion of society, so everyone has someone to relate to. The characters show emotion, not the storytelling, which allows you to empathize where you can, and you're not forced to have an opinion.
The story telling is done in a slow burn, gradually allowing you to understand the magnitude of the issue, make a difficult pill easier to swallow. This is a movie with a mission, that is reporting the story, not giving a spin on it, mirroring the investigative journalism it depicts.
