Review of Splendor in the Grass (1961) by Gracie S — 10 Jul 2010
It's nowhere near as flawless as East of Eden or Streetcar, but it's still a very captivating story of teenage love. I was really impressed by how provocative the movie was, the basic plot alone is risque even for today's audience.
You cant hep but feel sorry for Warren Beatty's character even though all of the trouble in his life was caused by his own hand. Natalie Wood gives a James Dean like performance with her emotions always on the sleeve of her jacket.
For the most part the movie was flawlessly acted, It was what drove the movie. I couldn't help but draw similarities from both Rebel Without a Cause and East of Eden regarding the story, but its so brilliantly acted and directed it becomes irrelevant .
It comes close to being on par with East of Eden, but ultimately took too much away from that story to be considered it's equal.
