Review of Splendor in the Grass (1961) by Se7Enth A — 22 Jun 2011
"Though nothing can bring back the hour/of splendor in the grass,/Glory in the flower,/We will grieve not, but rather find/Strength in what remains behind".
Splendor in the grass refers to young love, the forbidden, all consuming love. Elia Kazan's style of direction is very evident here. This film also marks Warren Beatty's first role along the luminous Natalie Wood. She rightfully earned the Academy Award nomination for her heartbreaking performance and I get to witness the movie debut of a born heartbreaker. Beatty is without a doubt a very good looking fella back then. Watching this classic after a few recent unsatisfactory movies, reaffirmed my belief that it is one of most special movies ever made. The acting, characterizations and ambience are alive and vivacious in a timeless way.
