Review of Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002) by Jl R — 13 Aug 2008
It was a decent animated movie by Dreamworks. Sorry...Disney is still King when it comes to this sort of story telling.
Definitely for kids and definitely for the horse lover. The story is narrated by Spirit, a heroic and "unbreakable" dun mustang.
The story is fast paced as we join Spirit on his journey from foal to young stallion who sacrificed his freedom to save his herd from cowboys who were capturing horses for the US Cavalry, and his series of experiences, both good and bad, at the hands of humans. He is befriended by a Lakota Sioux (I'm not certain they have the correct tribe for this story as it seems to bounce all over the place from Monument valley to Colorado, to suggesting the 7th cav in South Dakota), who tries to show him that not all men are bad. There's a series of recaptures before the happy feel good ending.
The one thing I disliked about this movie was the cliche representation that all "white man = bad/cruel/etc..." and only the indigenous people know how to train a horse.
