Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Joss R — 04 Jul 2017
Absolutely brilliant. I am a massive fan of Spiderman so seeing this on the day it came out was compulsory. Holland is great as Spiderman, really capturing the immaturity and humour of the character to a tee; showing fans a true yet unique version of the hero depicted in the comics.
I liked as well that he has to prove himself, in previous reboots he's discovered his powers & just then been Spiderman; here he actually becomes a hero. Keaton is great as Vulture, and whats really great is that his story is really shown, so much so that you empathise with him & understand why he'a doing what he is.
This for me makes him a really good villain because obviously we know he's going to go toe to toe with Spidey, but being able to understand his thinking means we can connect with him on an emotional level which is really nice.
The characters are all interesting & hold their own and have depth which is also nice to see. It doesn't skimp on the action either, the set pieces are well put together and as always with Marvel the CGI is breathtaking.
Downey-JR also is in this film the perfect amount - this is not Iron Man 4, he is simply a mentor, steering Peter in the right direction towards becoming Spider Man, because he's really Spider Boy so to speak.
So he doesn't steal the show at all just adds to an already engaging story and brings more humour that we've all come to love from his portrayal. This film really is brilliant, a must see for Marvel fans - the best Spiderman film to date.
