Review of Special (2006) by Ian G — 15 Feb 2008
Les is a lonely parking meter attendant who takes an experimental antidepressant that convinces him that he's a superhero. The film is so unique in that it's not only strange quirky and hilarious but incredibly dramatic and sad at the same time.
Hal Haberman is the first time Canadian born director of this film and I think that him as well as Michael Rapaport deserve a lot more recognition than they ever got for this film. I saw it at the 2006 Toronto After Dark Film Festival and since then have looked for it on DVD only to find it's still only on the road as a small festival film.
Nonetheless this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I like to think that I have good taste in movies, and as such I'm just really disappointed that this movie is still only floating around in obscurity.
