Review of Special (2006) by Kyle S — 21 Feb 2010
A good film. Unique and interesting; funny at times, and really sad at others. Arguably Michael Rapaport's only good performance, great even. Frankly, I didn't think he had it in him. But he's actually pretty good when he puts his mind to it.
I also liked the overall realism of the character's descent into madness. You see things from both points of view: his, and those of everyone else, and it really works. It's also really brutal at times, especially at the end. This is a sharp contrast to the relatively light, carefree, funny beginning. It's a comedy drama of sorts, with a great deal of violence and suffering at the end. Interesting.
Overall, a pretty good movie with some great performances, especially Rapaport who is not only watchable in this, but quite believable and enjoyable. A sharp contrast to every other one of his performances. Josh Peck is also really good in this, but that's to be expected as he's quite brilliant and will probably become a big star some day, assuming he doesn't kill himself beforehand.
Anyway, watch!
