Review of Speak (2004) by Dougal M — 27 Dec 2010
There is maybe one flicker of sentimentality in the end shot, but that aside, 'Speak' is authentic, moving, funny and engaging from start to finish.
Jessica Sharzer is masterful and detailed in her direction, and Annie Young Frisbie's adapted screenplay keeps the interest and emotional investment of the audience throughout its various twists and turns. The narrative structure is conventional, but in the context of the film works to it's advantage. It puts the hundreds of D class high school comedies to shame.
