Val Kilmer shows himself as a worthy actor in this movie. The mortality shown of the protagonist portrays something that not many american movies do; vulnerability. Though being the "Spartan" and going in alone does add a flavour of unwarranted cliché.
Though the reason and the ending makes up for this slight blunder. The twists of course add their own taste of enjoyment.
