Review of Spartacus (1960) by Luca V — 22 Mar 2008
Unfortunately I missed the first part of the film, where Spartacus is a gladiator. These poor slaves rebel against the Roman patricians, those bisexual beings. The young Cesar is not like the Cesar in the statues we all know, he is played by a tall muscular guy. but the main roman role is for Crass which in Italian is also an adjective to emphasize the ignorance of a person. There is also an old fat man who I was used to see as the judge in the Hitchcock movie -The Paradine Case-.
To telling you the truth, this is the worst Kubrick film I haveve ever seen. May be I am wrong, I watched it half sleepy, because of an accident happened to my skull. I liked the final, with all the poor discomfited slaves who are crucified. And before that I liked that scene where Crass asked the losing army in the battlefield to point him out mister Spartacus. And everybody stands up and say -It is me- - It is me-. You don t know this but the theme of this scene, in Italy was used for a famous advertising for the Durex condoms. The professor enters the class room and spots a condom on the floor, he picks the condom and ask with reproaching face -Whose is this?-, and voila, the nerd stands up and says - e¨ mio - (it is mine) and then all the other students, one after another.
I liked the wife of Spartacus, who, finally is a Free woman. And his new born child who will be the first Free man in the Spartacus family. Spartacus sacrifices himself for the liberty of all of us.
This movie is a manifesto, for all the working people, who want to free themselves from crass ignorant bosses (and colleagues).
