Review of Spartacus (1960) by Matt H — 06 Apr 2008
This movie's just flat-out too long, and visually it hasn't aged nearly as well as, say, Lawrence of Arabia. Everything looks way out of focus most of the time, maybe because of "Panavision" or something.
The acting performances of Douglas, Olivier, and especially Ustinov (as the wacky gladiator owner/trader) are very good, but several scenes drag on needlessly, and the matte-painted backgrounds are painfully obvious in nearly every scene.
Having also recently watched Braveheart and Gladiator, it's clear to see how far epic films have come.
