Review of Spartacus (1960) by Jake G — 02 Nov 2009
SPARTACUS gets a 80%, "classic" score because it has unexpectedly taken top honors as my favorite of the "epic" genre...so far. Granted, I have not seen some of the famous Lean films yet (DR. Z and LAWRENCE), and this is not quite Kubrick's film, but I unexpectedly took a strong liking to it.
I loved SPARTACUS because it successfully avoids the cliched "Jesus subplot" that befell many a movie made in the 50's and 60's. It is a straight forward bio flick of a fictional gladiator turned general, Spartacus. From the beginning, I liked SPARTACUS, and I'd recommend this "minor" Kubrick film to, well, anyone.
