Review of Spartacus (1960) by Rob H — 15 Oct 2010
It's hard to go wrong with the amazing cast assembled for Spartacus, but some of the flaws can be glaring; combatants with sneakers, antonius with a thick NY accent, Varinia with a subtle English accent and sometimes subtle emotions, probably inconsistent with those of a salve.
Trying to place this revolt in history is a bit complicated; in general, I though the slave revolts in Italy were about a hundred years before this one supposedly took place. It is clearly a message film, with political overtunes, particularly for the author of the book, Howard Fast, and the screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who were both among the blacklisted, but not in this movie.
