Review of Spartacus (1960) by Jorge G — 06 Aug 2011
Sparticus is Kurbrick's attempt at encapsulating the essence of Ancient Rome. The film covers nearly everything love, politics and military in a bit long time frame of 3 hours and 16 minutes. Although it seems a bit long at times, the performances of Douglas, Laughton, Olivier and others keep the film going and interesting.
The movie is indeed on an epic scale, on par with films like Ben Hur and gladiator. Surprisingly of all great presences on screen Ustinov was my favorite character as he calmly shifted his way through all aspects of Rome and sneakily got his way despite being on of the least amoral characters in the whole film.
Overall a solid film and glad to have watched, but will be some time before I ever see it again.
