Review of Spartacus (1960) by Lindsay W — 18 Sep 2012
A sweeping epic with a provacative story and first rate actors, Spartacus still isn't the flawless film I'd hoped it would be. Kubrick's slow pacing still isn't a favorite of mine, and the first hour is an overwrought introduction to our main character.
The cinematography was good with some nice shots of Rome and the countryside, but the majority of the film is not particularly visually striking or imaginatively shot. Far and away the worst thing is the score, with its circusy tones that overtake every scene.
Even the love scenes are treated to heavy orchestra. The "I Am Spartacus" scene is no doubt iconic, and the final hour is the most engaging with battle scenes and political intrigue. Spartacus has a timeless story; it just doesn't have timeless production value.
