Review of Spartacus (1960) by Jayakrishnan R — 11 Jul 2014
"Spartacus" is one of the the better sword and sandle epics, but most of it is a snooze fest. Like the boot camp sequence Kubrick's better film, "Full Metal Jacket," this movie peaks during the gladiator training sequence.
The battle toward the end is classic Kubrick. Kirk Douglas hired Kubrick to be the director of the film he was leading/producing because he thought the 31-year-old director would be a pushover, and not enough of Kubrick's style comes across here, to the detriment of the entire film.
