Review of Sparkle (1976) by V. S — 27 Jan 2007
This was a coming of age movie for me. Lonette Mckee did the best she could with a poorly written script, though her talent shown through never the less. The movies' musical interpretation of the soundtrack makes the movie worth it alone.
I'm a fan of Aretha Franklin, no matter she sings, just touches the soul, but the music in the movie was equally moving. And watching a young and sexy Phillip Michael Thomas didn't hurt either.
It falls short in what appeared to be an attempt at not falling into the "blaxplotation" genre of films of that era, but then that is usually the default setting for whites trying to tell a story about black life.
I guess it's something odd about there being any appearance of what may be misconstrued as "normal" in the day and life of black people.
