Review of Soylent Green (1973) by Jose Luis P — 07 Feb 2012
Squandered potential. Too few of the scenes really give you a sense of how this society has adapted to its excess population, though those that do are spine-tingling, like the riot that transpires when a market runs out of the titular foodstuff. And the awful special effect that is supposed to be smog is very bad indeed; they just processed the film so that it has this uneven cloudy greenish cast, which becomes especially distracting whenever they need to, you know, move the damn camera.
One positive thing: it left me really eager to read Harry Harrison's "Make Room, Make Room," even though I understand it eschews the climactic revelation of the film.
