Review of Southpaw (2015) by Kj P — 07 Sep 2015
Any cliche you can think of, this film has. However, that is not always a bad thing, especially when your cliches are as effectively written as these are. "Southpaw" follows Billy Hope as he is on a hot streak and about to retire for a while with his wife and daughter.
After the death of his wife, his life is flipped upside down and he must fight once again to retain the right to be with his daughter. You can pretty much see every beat coming, but the dialogue, characters, and especially the performances all across the board are what make this a great film to watch.
Not only was I invested the entire way through, but I was able to ignore every single cliche. With great direction, a good enough screenplay, and a cast that will have you in tears, "Southpaw" is definitely one of the most underrated films of 2015.
I will warn those with a sensitive heart though. Without a solid heart, this film will break your heart six ways to sunday. It is one long downward spiral of a film that never lets up. I had a great time watching this film.
It is extremely far from original and I saw most of the film coming, but "Southpaw" is still really, really well made!
