Review of Southpaw (2015) by Gimly M — 15 Sep 2015
What doesn't work for me is exactly how clear cut the transitions are from quarter to quarter in Southpaw. At almost every half hour mark on the dot, the tone completely shifts and doesn't mesh at all with what we've seen up to this point, no quarter is out and out bad, but they all fall out of cohesion with one another very quickly, so it feels less like a journey or a three act saga and more like four disparate bites randomly picked up out of someone's life.
But the tension is real, and the acting chops are out of this freaking world. Jake Gyllenhaal has been proving to the world at large what many of us have known since 2001, that he is a force to be reckoned with on screen. Seriously, everyone in Southpaw is so good I almost even wanted to punch 50 Cent's character more because he is a bastard than because of the actor playing him.
Crazy days.
