Review of Southpaw (2015) by Prentice S — 18 Sep 2015
Like any Jake Gyllenhaal film in the last few years, the best of part "Southpaw" is Jake Gyllenhaal. It's clear he's a talented actor: he trained endlessly, gained tons of muscle (especially considering his role prior, "Nightcrawler," in which he was thinner than a rail), and he's mastered falling entirely into character.
Unfortunately, Kurt Sutter's writing mirrors "Sons of Anarchy" too closely in some ways. It's utterly depressing, but it lacks the character development that made Jax from "Sons" intriguing.
Rachel McAdams and Forest Whitaker are decent, but again, the writing holds them back. I have faith that Antoine Fuqua can and will do better with a dark story, once the right project arises.
