Review of Southpaw (2015) by Dina M — 04 Nov 2015
A run-of-the-mill boxing comeback story, but not as generic as you'd think. Gyllenhaal proves he can play any role. Last year it was a sociopath, in 2007 it was a soft spoken journalist, and in 2015 it is a bumbling boxer.
It isn't the individualistic character that Gyllenhaal plays this time, but a person looking to learn how to take care of not only his daughter, but himself as well. This movie is, on paper, just like the rest, but the performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, and even 50 Cent make it even better.
