Review of Southpaw (2015) by Christopher C — 08 Jul 2016
I don't normally like boxing movies, because I consider the "sport" of boxing to be just one notch lower than the gladiator combats of ancient Rome and exploitive of the boxers who endanger their lives so that others can make huge amounts of money while the fighters end up brain damaged wrecks of men.
The violence appeals me. I've never even seen Raging Bull. But this film had an excellent and moving story line and superior performances by Gyllenhaal and Whitaker, along with good direction and camera work.
Because it was more about human emotion than boxing, it kept me watching Billy;s heartbreak , fall and battle to overcome himself and rise again for the sake of winning back his daughter. Good dramatic film and definitely worth a watch.
