Wow. Even though this film might be solely driven by its leading man, it still packs a serious emotional punch. Jake Gyllenhaal triumphs in a cliche; although, gripping and well acted story of redemption.

I can't say much on Rachel McAdams because SPOILER: She dies. Very early in the film which sets in motion Billy's Downfall and inevitable redemption. I can see why people soil have problems reacting to this death as we never got much time to develop but McAdams nails the material she's given, as always.

Aside from Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker next best as far as performances go, just great emotional acting and the bond he forms with Gyllenhaal was one of my favourite parts of the film. He also adds much needed comic relief when things get too dull. And they do get DULL.

One of my only criticisms is how gruelling it can be to watch Billy suffer so much, it's like there wasn't enough the writers could throw at him to f**k up his life, it just keeps coming (Looking at you Sutter). The ending however is well earned and should have you leaving the cinema feeling teary eyed and inspired! Enjoy.
