Review of Southland Tales (2007) by Jon B — 02 Apr 2009
It sets up an interesting premise in the beginning and then gets the viewer totally lost somewhere in the middle. Unlike Kelly's recent movie, Donnie Darko, the film never leaves clues throughout itself that slowly pull us out of its endlessly abstract morass.
Despite its ensemble cast, it leaves us with more questions than answers; that we were somewhat cognizant of what happened, but with a feeing of lingering uncertainty. Kelly would also have been better off adapting the first 3 chapters of the graphic novel along with the movie instead of dropping us in the middle of it and having us attempt to figure out everything from there.
