Review of Southland Tales (2007) by Brian C — 21 Aug 2014
Richard Kelly is a filmmaker who is appropriately underrated. Many call him a one-hit wonder after Donnie Darko's success and the failure of his subsequent work. I find him comparable to David Lynch, and his style always leaves me wanting more, even this sophomore effort of his, the reviled Southland Tales.
.. I loved every minute of it, although I couldn't wait for it to end, if that makes any sense. This dystopian sci-fi satire dark comedy slapstick apocalypse thriller will make your eyes pop, your brain break, your sides split, and frustrate you to no end with its seemingly intentional incoherence.
I recommend it to nobody, but as a fan of art for the exuberant sake of art, I couldn't help but love it, gaping warts and all.
