Review of Southland Tales (2007) by Daniel G — 13 Sep 2009
It rules . . . . .and (sorry to FB peeps with gentle ears), but fuck the haters. Seriously, fuck them. This film is the most audacious and urgent of all the political/war films of this turbulent decade, and I really resent the volume of negativity that exists in regard to this film. In particular, it galls me that so many people diss this film without having seen it.
Southland Tales depicts a society on the verge of anarchy, following an amplified and expanded war on terror that's promulgated by the Bush Administration in response to fictional events. It illustrates just how scary a path this nation was on for a few years in the earlier part of this decade. It's also a comedy, and a musical, and a mystery. And Cheri Oteri is brilliant in it . . yes Cheri Oteri from Saturday Night Live.
