Review of Southland Tales (2007) by Kris D — 31 Jan 2010
Messy and complicated and entirely too short for its ambitions. Is it a tongue-in-cheek political comedy? Is it something about the space-time continuum? Who the hell knows. Strong hammed-up performances from all of the cast, with pretentious voice-over readings of Revelations that didn't really work for me.
Overall, I really did enjoy the movie up until the "pimp" stuff started filtering into the script about 75% of the way in, which was ridiculous and gave it the letdown feel that I had when I watched the ending of Fight Club, ruining a lot of the film for me in the process. I'd only recommend this film to a viewer with patience.
