Review of Southern Comfort (1981) by Steven H — 12 Jun 2007
Should not be dismissed as a Deliverance clone, no matter how many similarities there may be. In my opinion, it's even superior to its "big brother" - much thanks to Walter Hill's successful wrangling of his ridiculously underrated cast and the sheer punch he packs as a director.
Hill is in his right element here, squeezing dirty, gritty intensity out of every scene until it all comes to an incredibly tense and satisfying climax.
I've often referred to Hill as a "poor man's Peckinpah" (with love, mind you). Well, on this one he's not a poor man's anything, but a brilliant action director in his own right.
Just too bad most people see Deliverance first.
