Review of Southern Comfort (1981) by Tor M — 17 Jul 2018
A bunch of National Guards are up for a yearly exercise. It's just like it always is, some haters, some chill dudes, some army fans and the weird ones. They are on to some sort of swamp mission and walks around and in small lakes. They get some enemies. Real enemies and it get's nasty. The test turned out to become real, but how to deal with it?
A great score and sound effects sets the mood for this pretty atmospheric film. The idiots running the show kills the vibe. Sure, gun happy American 30 year old somethings that never get along to well is a ticking bomb and it goes off several times.
There's a few things I do like here, but I do miss some common sense into the heads of these people. Like the way they blame the first guy they meet for killing their friend and all the unnecessary violence. Keith Carradine is a big name here, along with several semi-known actors. Plenty, actually. I also would like to give it some cred for the rather special ending.
I don't get all the high ratings for this film since it's mediocre at best and that's with great help from the mood it has from music and setting.
4.5 out of 10 blanks.
