Review of Southern Comfort (1981) by Eric R — 05 Mar 2012
A Deliverance-esc thriller-horror.
Southern Comfort is a decent watch. I did enjoy it - I wasn't sure what to expect to be honest. I was thinking a politically driven Vietnam thriller (To my ignorance) so as you can imagine I was a little surprised to find this being anything but. The story follows a squad of National Guard Reservists through a grueling exercise turned bad.
To make up time the group of Reservists stumble across a camp in the Louisiana swamplands and make a fatal mistake by borrowing a boat to cross the deep waters which is stopping them in their tracks and more importantly for the troops so R&R with some local women - However when the local Cajuns come back to find the boat is gone so begins a manhunt which will not only push the mens training but also their sanity.
The Cajun folk are simple folk but find imaginative ways of dealing with the enemy and despite the better training the National Guard Reservists are picked off one by one.
Southern Comfort is the sort of film you watch on a whim - Nothing else on or to do - But it's the sort of film that will keep you entertained enough to pass some time.
